With the end of the SERCAAL conference held just this past weekend, I would like to dedicate some of this time to talk about special issues and topics that were hot at this conference–as well as share with you all some of the pictures.
During this conference, we had an amazing variety of speakers and entertainers. From young emcee Mandeep Sethni, to photographer Corky Lee, to UF Alumni Sandy Chiu and Linh Nguyen, and to innovative dancer/singer/pop-culturista/everything performer Kate Rigg, we had some amazing dynamics within the whole lot. Not too mention a huge applause for our keynote speakers: film-maker Lina Hoshino, Columbia University graduate Calvin Sun, co-founder of the Lesbian-Gay Male Programs Office at the University of Michigan Jim Toy, and president of the University of West Georgia Dr. Beheruz N. Sethna.
Some of the workshops that were hot were Calvin Sun’s “Sex and Sexuality” workshop, as well as his “Social/Networking Etiquette” workshop. One workshop I attended that I thought was particulary interesting was Sylvie Kim’s “Blogosphere” workshop. Sylvie is the author of blog “The Antisocial Ladder”, which can be read here. I think her presentation was powerful in showing me how different opinions are about events that happen in everyday life regarding race and social issues in general. It also showed me how some things may be seen as okay in terms of entertainment purposes, but there are still the ‘grey areas’. And the most important thing she demonstrated was just how easy it was to make a blog and get your word out there–to circulate information about the wrongdoings happening anytime, anywhere–whether it be with a picture that is offensive (Miley Cyrus…) or maybe someone should be recognized for their achievements and work as a forward figure.
Maybe this is why my blog/update today is so long-winded and personalized for once.
But this is one workshop that was held at SERCAAL that I wanted to share with you.
Here are some amazing pictures of the conference taken by Long Nguyen and Oanh Nguyen.
